Photo Quiz #18
By Jim Burns
Clue:
These birds are all in the same family, their family name derived from the Latin for ‘rump’ and ‘foot.’ Two are in the same genus, their genus name derived from the Greek for ‘foot’ and the Latin for ‘head.’ The species name for one is the derivative for the common name of the second. The species name of the third is the same as the genus name for the other two. Sounds like the taxonomists were as confused as we often are when we see all three in Arizona in winter.
